TEHRAN -- Tokyo’s Bunkamura Theater resounded with cheers from the audience as Iranian kamancheh (spike fiddle) virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor performed on Monday.
The concert was part of a music program organized by the Japanese company Conversation under the title of “Nights of Ramadan”.
The Bunkamura Theater also hosted the Pakistani singer Faiz Ali Faiz who song qawwali ahead of Kalhor’s performance.
Qawwali is a Sufi Muslim devotional music characterized by simple melodies, forceful rhythms, and wild improvisations that encourage a state of euphoria in the listener.
“Nights of Ramadan” started on Sept. 30 in Japan’s central city of Nagoya, where Kalhor gave a concert, and will continue in Osaka until Oct. 6.
The organizers aim to familiarize the Japanese people with Islamic countries’ cultures.
